The Curse of M-Shaped Theater?

新圖片 (1).bmp新圖片 (2).bmp

The phenomenon of the M-shaped Theater, which is proposed by Li-Heng Li (2008), means the two extremes of theatrical performances in Taiwan.  Either they are thoroughly original plays, or entirely adapted from classic works without new interpretations.  It seems that Taiwan’s theatrical groups have not been, at least in the past, confident enough to give the classic works new looks.

The Purposed Winners

Winning, which has always been the climax of reality show, could be manipulated.  Manipulation itself, as a matter of fact, would not be totally fresh to us. Tracing back the history of beauty contests, we can easily grasp the examples about winning which had been entirely manipulated.  Nonetheless, we should actually be surprised, or even, be irritated, by the fact that the winning in reality show such as America’s Next Top Model could also be manipulated as well.

A Drama or Reality Show

As a faithful audience of America’s Next Top Model—the most successful modeling reality show in the world—I used to take all this show brought to me.  Nonetheless, while dramatic scenes take place more and more frequently, I start to question the reliability of my favorite TV show.  Is it a reality show which literally supposed to be presented authentically, or does it inevitably become a drama after all?

The Rituals for Singers in Taiwan

Singers in Taiwan, as a matter of fact, collectively follow certain rituals for a promising career.  The premieres for their albums, Chinese as 簽唱會, are probably the most popularly-applied rituals.  Singers, whether they are newly-coming or not, would definitely have premieres before the albums officially released.  They could be highly encouraged by the premieres since there mostly would be many people appearing––including the real fans and those ones who merely desire to see the so-called stars.

On the other hand, fans could, in these premieres, get the signatures from their favorite stars, and have a chance to see them in a close distance as well.  The fans, therefore, participate in the rituals mutually with their favorite singers.

Summary of Bakhtin’s argument

Based on Bakhtin’s argument, there is huge difference between “novelistic discourse” (269) and “poetic discourse” (269).  “Novelistic discourse” will contain diversity of language—which is called “heteroglossia” (263)—with various intentions and social connections.

Close Reading Paper

The paragraph I want to get a closer reading is on page 160, starting from “The knight has already gone” to “who is the daughter of a very prominent duke.”  This scene is actually about Don Quixote’s ideal future picture of the process how to be a king.

As I Lay Dying

"As I Lay Dying" uses consciousness stream and multiple narrators to complete the whole story. Due to the first-person narrator, we can understand the different thoughts of every single character and view the story with various angles. However, this is just about the technique which used by the author. When it comes to this novel, the conflicts between different fields and the contradiction within the character himself/herself will be my focus.

Looking at the Yellow Wallpaper through the Secret Window

“The Yellow Wallpaper“by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is usually mentioned as a work about Feminism. I have to agree with it. Although some will say that it is narrated by the first-person of an unstable-minded woman; therefore, it is more a “diary” than a convincible truth. Nevertheless, we could still assert that this masterpiece stands for women by some evidences.

300

Like "King Arthur", this is a story based on history, and it portrayed one group of men fighting for freedom as well. But the difference is that, "King Arthur" is for the eternal glory of King Arthur; therefore he stands out others obviously. And "300" focus on the ethnic characteristics of Spartans; therefore, it not just portrayed one single man, but for the whole spirits Spartans.

King Arthur

King Arthur's story took place in 15th centuries. As Rome Empire expanded, the brave Sarmatians became their knights and served for them. Rome Empire commanded them to guard the southern England, right against the northern.

However, Rome Empire never thought about Sarmatians' feelings. They just gave commands after commands, until this one—to rescue the pope's family from the northern enemies Saxons. For real freedom, King Arthur launched again with the other knights. And, from here begun the legend of King Arthur…

Breakfast on Pluto

"Breakfast on Pluto" is the classic example of "growing story" and "main character's journey". Due to his mother's leaving, Patrick spends his whole life to chase after the shadow of hers. Thinking that this sort of chasing can fill the emptiness of his mind and gain the feeling of belonging, he just does not quit it. Maybe you will ask, "Is his mother's leaving and his chasing make him a girlish boy?"
